Cape Blanco is a lighthouse story and a ranch story

Cape Blanco brings two parts of Curry County history onto one headland. The Blue Book lists the lighthouse as a county point of interest. State Parks places Cape Blanco at Oregon’s westernmost tip. The lighthouse dates to 1870. State Parks calls it the oldest standing lighthouse on the Oregon coast. The United States Coast Guard manages it. Its 59-foot tower stands on a headland 245 feet above the sea.
The landward story sits in the Hughes House. Patrick and Jane Hughes had the 3,000-square-foot farmhouse built in 1898. The house still carries its Victorian character. The lighthouse and house both appear on the National Register of Historic Places. Read together, they keep Cape Blanco from becoming only a scenery label. One building holds the navigation story; the other holds the ranch story. Sea-facing work and land-based work share the same place. That pairing gives the western headland its lasting local shape.
