The Oregon Dunes are a national-forest landscape made of sand
The Forest Service identifies an immense sand expanse inside Siuslaw National Forest, while the Blue Book places it in a county stretching from the Pacific to Mount Thielsen.

Douglas County runs from sea level at the Pacific Ocean to Mount Thielsen in the Cascade Range. On its coastal side, the Oregon Blue Book lists Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area among the county’s points of interest. That puts the dunes inside a county with both ocean shore and Cascade summit.
The dunes also sit within Siuslaw National Forest. The Forest Service describes the Siuslaw as stretching from coastal mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Within it, the Oregon Dunes form an immense expanse of sand.
Trees are not the only shape a national forest takes here. At Douglas County’s Pacific end, sand, forest, and ocean occupy the same Oregon ground. Mount Thielsen marks the county’s other reach in the Cascades.
