The Oregon Blue Book names Steens Mountain among Harney County’s points of interest. The name can sound like one summit. The Bureau of Land Management describes something much larger: a 70-mile fault block in southern Harney County.
The landform rises above 9,000 feet and holds deep gorges shaped by glaciers. That scale makes Steens a broad high-desert landform, not a lone summit.
Congress designated the Steens Mountain Wilderness in 2000, and the Bureau of Land Management manages it. The wilderness is not the same thing as the surrounding cooperative management and protection area. That larger area includes public and private lands along with specially designated places.
