At Shore Acres, a formal garden meets craggy sandstone cliffs above the ocean. Oregon State Parks traces the place to lumberman and shipbuilder Louis Simpson, who built an oceanfront summer home there in 1906–07. The estate gardens held plants brought from around the world aboard his ships.
The original mansion burned in July 1921. After Simpson built a larger replacement and the estate later fell into disrepair, Oregon purchased the initial holding from him in 1942. The garden was eventually restored.
A private estate became a state park where the formal garden and the rough ocean edge still face each other.
